Chapter I: The Dogs
The Times have changed. The morning does not begin with roosters or alarm clocks anymore. It is always night like secluded. Distant growling of hungry dogs start the day as the sun comes out reluctantly.
But it is well past dawn from when the story begins. Inside the Swanson residence. It is close to 9 am but no one is in a hurry.
"Mom my new phone is on it's way!" screamed 10 year old Arita, she was excited to say the least. She just woke up and without washing up took on her old phone and saw Amazon's notification that her order was out for delivery. She had ordered a new phone.
"What?" Asked Jaquelin, Arita's mom.
She was in the kitchen, making breakfast.
"My new phone mom, it’s out for delivery."
"That's great honey, could you please wake dad for me? Then start getting ready for school."
"Okay."
Arita went to her parents room to wake her sleeping dad.
"Dad wake up, my new phone is coming!"
"Hmmh? Oh... when?" asked a sleepy Eddie Swanson, Arita's dad.
"It’s out for delivery."
"Great. You're welcome."
Eddie went right back in to sleep until finally he was dragged out of bed by his daughter.
Arita finished her breakfast before Eddie finished washing up and went to the balcony to see if the Amazon drone was anywhere nearby. Jaquelin started criticizing her husband. "You know you're raising a spoiled little girl, she's 10 years old and this is already her second smartphone. Was it absolutely necessary to buy her a new one in an year's time?"
"Honey, you know she asked it for her birthday, was I supposed to say no?"
"She's gonna ask for another one next year, you know that! We gotta save more Eddie, there's no telling what the future holds...everything..."
Arita's sudden scream from the balcony disrupted Jaquelin.
"Mom, mom! Dad! Oh my God, mom!!"
They came running to their daughter.
"What is it honey, what happened?"
"The dogs jumped on the drone, my phone was with it!" Arita started crying profusely as Eddie and Jaquelin looked out the balcony in horror. The stray dogs were ripping apart the drone and a package, which possibly contained Arita's birthday present. They're hungry, they're looking for food.
